More Information: Rhizomes (roots) of monopodial bamboo (spreading) begin their shooting cycle in southern Ohio during mid April. This is very fast growth and the plant will attain it's full height by the end of May. With any new plant it may only be one or two feet tall and must be protected from intense sunlight and harsh conditions. After it's rooted it's much more tolerant of it's surroundings. It will always need sunlight and have good drainage to prosper. After that cycle is complete the rhizome will begin to spread horizontally throughout summer and fall and will go dormant when the temperature drops to below 60. It must have the cool dormancy to rest and stop the growth or it'll die. If a rhizome is purchased after the shooting cycle is complete the rhizome will put up growth (leaves) for sunlight feeding through photosynthesis. This brings energy into the rhizome where it's stored until next years shooting cycle.
